The play is adapted from Harold Gray's long comic "Little Orphan Annie" . The musical is set during the Great Depression in New York City in the 1930s and tells the story of 11-year-old Annie who escapes from the orphanage where she lives and begins searching for her parents. After escaping from the crazy orphanage owner Miss Agatha Hannigan, Annie is adopted by the eccentric billionaire Oliver Warbucks, who wants to adopt her. She refuses at first, determined to escape her harsh life and find her biological family. But after a scammer couple pretended to be her parents and tried to adopt her, the Warbucks reunited with Annie permanently, reminding her that "the sun will come out tomorrow."
Annie was first adapted for the big screen in 1982, five years after its Broadway debut. Directed by John Huston (1956's Moby-Dick ), the film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score, and was a commercial success, grossing over $57 million at the box office on a budget of $35 million.
