According to TikTok, you should bake pizza at your next picnic

If there are two things people love, it's pizza and a fresh barbecue dinner in the summer. But what if you could combine the two to create the ultimate summer meal? Yes, gone are the days of needing a pizza oven to make dough at home, because according to TikTok, we should all be baking pizza.

If your five-year plan is littered with grilled pizza, you're not alone. This trend has taken #FoodTok by storm in recent months, because after all, who doesn’t love pizza? With summer just around the corner, this unique prep technique is one you definitely want to try before it's too late. While it's unclear who started the tasty craze, the hashtag #grillpizza has been viewed more than 4 million times on TikTok and is filled with creators raving about the results. The best part is, this dish is easy to make, so expect to spend more summer nights on the grill than usual.

To make your own pizza, you'll need to follow the same process you normally would when making pizza, except this time you'll be swapping your oven for a grill. You'll also want to use a pizza stone, which is a portable cooking surface commonly used when making wood-fired pizza. According to, you can start by preheating the pizza stone on your grill to 475 degrees and prep your homemade or store-bought pizza dough with all the toppings and toppings, then slide it onto the pizza stone. From there, you let the pizza rest for 10 minutes, and soon you'll have "fully risen dough with just a hint of burnt flavor on top and a completely crisp base." Very simple.

The creator used confit chives as the base for the pizza and garnished it with basil, arugula, burrata cheese and a squeeze of lemon juice, though she also shared that using tomato sauce "would work just as well."

If you're looking for an even easier grilled pizza recipe, @chefdaniellesepsy shares that all you really need is oil-covered dough, tomato sauce, and your favorite toppings, "and it's ready to go in minutes!" I'm already drooling .

Many TikTok users also prepare pizza on the grill instead of using a pizza stone, and while the end result is less aesthetically pleasing (getting the pizza dough on the grill is harder than it looks), it's all part of the experience. User @sophiegreene__ flips the dough when there's enough char on the bottom and adds a layer of toppings, creating a pizza full of crunch and flavor.

"Instead of baking the pizza dough, we bake it, holy game changer - I don't think we'll do it any other way again," the creator commented. Now that's an endorsement.

Summer is all about grilling, and I can’t think of a better way to start the season than with a pizza (or two, or three). To get even more into the warm-weather vibe, you can always pair it with a summery pasta drink, and don’t forget to finish the meal with a pasta salad.
