Potato chips are one of the most versatile snack foods. They can be salty, cheesy, savory, spicy, or even sweet. (Remember Lay’s Cappuccino Chips? Or do you want to forget?) The limits of potato chips are being tested once again as Lay’s just launched five new flavors. Don’t worry: none of them are inspired by latte.
The five new flavors are inspired by iconic dishes from restaurants across the country. Starting July 13, you'll see five new flavors in the chip aisle. In the meantime, let’s dive into the new flavors, shall we?
First, Lay's Nashville Hot Chicken Fries are inspired by Nashville's Party Fowl. If you're a fan of Flamin' Hot, this might be right up your alley. Next up, we have Lay's Philly Cheesesteak Crisps inspired by Philly's Geno's steaks. My best guess is that these will taste a lot like typical cheese and onion slices, but with some extra umami from the "steak." There's also Lay's Wavy Carnitas Street Taco chips, inspired by Los Angeles' El Torito. This flavor profile is a bit difficult to pin down. Maybe it's a mixture of chili and lime?
Lay's Chile Relleno is inspired by Albuquerque's Cocina Azul, which may have strong flavors of poblano pepper and cheese. Slightly different from the other four is the Lay's Kettle Cooked New York Style Pizza, inspired by Grimaldi's Pizzeria in New York City. This is the only kettle-boiled variety in the batch, and it'll be interesting to see if the pizza flavor (a flavor that's difficult to get right) lives up to its reputation.
The new flavors will launch at multiple retailers nationwide the week of July 13th. The Chile Relleno flavor will be sold exclusively at Walmart and 7-Eleven. No matter where you buy your chips, you should be able to find new flavors inspired by the restaurant. All five flavors are available for a limited time only. So if they appeal to you, you'll want to get them before they disappear.
Lay's is no stranger to creative and quirky potato chip flavors. They have fiery dill pickle chips. They have honey grill. Their fries are inspired by everything from crab spice to biscuits and gravy. They even launched blueberry Lays potato chips in China, which makes the new Philly cheesesteak chips look tame. In other words, these five new flavors of potato chips will have a lot of good company when they're in stores.
