In terms of warm and fuzzy feelings, there's nothing better than hopping into bed at the end of a long day. It feels so good to snuggle up in one and feel cozy, especially when you're feeling cold or unusually tired. A feeling of relief washes over you, maybe even makes you so dizzy that you laugh, squirm, and kick your feet.
On TikTok, this reaction is known as a "bliss attack," and judging by the thousands of likes and views the phrase has on the platform, it appears to be a fairly common experience.
That’s the problem with TikTok, isn’t it? We all do these weird things behind closed doors like random girls dinners, cozy cricket feet, and lazy bed rot days, but when these things go viral, you quickly realize You never really have a unique experience in life.
Under creator @liammillerr's happiness attack video, one person commented, "Like fr why am I so excited," while another wrote, "Humans are so stupid why do we do this?" Another wrote One person asked: "Oh does this happen to anyone else?" while someone else chimed in with "That's me".
It's kind of cute to think about how many people feel happy when they go to bed, but what causes this and why do we all do it? Here, the sleep expert shares her thoughts.
"Happiness attacks" are actually very common
Dr. Shelby Harris, director of sleep health at Sleepopolis, says happiness is the feeling of joy that washes over you when you go to bed. Imagine smiling happily and squirming with glee as you snuggle up against the sheets, hugging the pillows, and find a perfectly comfortable position.
Such a huge reaction may seem strange, but there's a simple explanation: "Feeling a 'happiness hit' or feeling extremely happy when going to bed at the end of the day may be because it's finally time to get comfortable, your day is officially over, and it's time Just relax," she tells Bustle. That in itself is something to celebrate.
Your bed can also provide you with a sense of security, which can add an extra layer of contentment, especially if you're stressed. "It's a personal belief, but many people believe that bedtime equals happiness and relaxation," Harris says.
On TikTok, many people say they also feel a heightened sense of well-being when they feel cold. Harris says this is because your bed provides a refuge and a place to stay warm, so the moment you jump in, you know relief is on the way. ," she says.
Can happiness improve sleep?
Climbing into bed is always good, but crawling into bed and enjoying the bliss is next level. It makes you feel extra comfortable, cozy and content, but according to Harris, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a good night's sleep.
"Ensuring a good night's sleep depends on other factors, such as maintaining a consistent bedtime and a cool, quiet, and dark sleeping environment," she says, but a little extra comfort certainly doesn't hurt.
Feelings of happiness can hit you hard after a busy day, so if you happen to sleep better that night, it might just be because you're really tired. If you've been working hard all day, it makes sense that you'd feel extra excited when you lay down - and you're likely to hit more Z's.
Is this really a universal experience?
It's hard to say if everyone experiences happiness attacks, or if everyone experiences them in the exact same way, but according to Harris, many people can relate to the feeling of happiness attacks when they go to bed after a long day. A sense of ease. Like so many experiences with TikTok, it instantly connects you to strangers on the internet when you realize you're not the only one smiling and squirming after getting into bed.
