What is White Elephant Gift Exchange?

The holidays are filled with traditions of spending time with loved ones, friends, and coworkers. But while you're used to a basic Secret Santa exchange, you might not know how a White Elephant gift exchange works. (For what it's worth, it's also known as "Dirty Santa" or "Yankee Swap.") But if you've been asked to participate in one of these and have never heard of it, don't panic just yet. It's actually pretty fun once you figure out the rules. Yes – there are usually more guidelines than a regular Secret Santa exchange. But hear me out.

The purpose of the White Elephant gift exchange is for fun. While other types of gifts have this vibe, white elephant gifts take it to a whole different level. Gifts should be as weird and funny as possible. Think ridiculous gadgets, weird artwork, and fun pranks. Like I said, these projects are all about fun and laughter.

That's not all. White elephant exchange can also serve as a competition. The goal of the participants is to take away the best gift from the pile. But when you’re having trouble choosing a gift exactly, you might wonder how that’s possible. This comes down to the actual exchange process of the white elephant game.

Unlike a Secret Santa exchange, you can't pick a name out of thin air. You’re also not buying something specifically for anyone. Instead, you'll buy an item with a white elephant theme before the party - usually a useless gift, but people may change this up for their party - keep that in mind. There may be other requirements, such as "wearables only" or anything worth more than $20. Everyone goes to the party with a wrapped gift and adds it to the pile.

To start the game, the participant must be the first player; this can be decided randomly or by randomly selecting numbers. The first player then opens the gift in front of everyone. As for the next player? This person can "steal" the first person's gift or take unwrapped items from the gift pile. Each gift can only be stolen twice before it is considered "dead".

This process keeps repeating. Anyone who must give up a gift can also choose a new gift or steal something from someone else. Only 3 exchanges between the current player and the previous player are allowed per round. This is crucial to making sure the game doesn't last forever. Additionally, an item can only be stolen from another person once per turn.

Phew…how about a holiday game? It may sound complicated, but it's easier to understand once the communication is in full swing. Not surprisingly, the white elephant exchange can come in many variations. If you want, you can even simplify it to just one exchange per turn. It all depends on how the game is organized.

Again, the point of the game is to take away the most ridiculous gift from a pile. Your decision to steal will depend on chance, luck, and your gut. While it's easy to compete, don't forget that the purpose of the game is to have a laugh. Happy swapping!
