Making a simple Lisa Frank Halloween costume is perfect for the busy '90s girl, because when it comes to Halloween, simple costumes are just what us busy ladies need. If you can use something from your closet, kitchen, or local thrift store, even better. Not only will this save you a ton of money, but it's much better than spending money on store-bought clothes. Best of all, making DIY outfits is the best way to show off your personality during the best vacation ever. It’s not like I’m playing favorites or anything.
Making your own Halloween costume is also the perfect way to pay homage to your favorite foods, animals, and decades. Since I'm a '90s girl at heart, I couldn't help but design an outfit inspired by this amazing period. What could be more '90s than the rainbow goodness of Lisa Frank? That's right... nothing.
Luckily, it's pretty easy to create an ensemble inspired by Lisa Frank. With just a few cheap supplies and an hour of your time, you can transform yourself into Painter Panda, one of the carefree creative pandas from Lisa Frank's gang. Once Halloween night rolls around, I can guarantee that other '90s babies will know who you are based on the heart logo alone. After all, we, the post-90s generation, must stick together.
Supplies:
- Blue dress or denim overalls - White canvas baseball cap - Wide paint brush - Acrylic paint (pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) - Foam brush - Scissors - Lisa Frank heart logo print - Hot glue gun
Here are some tips and tricks from your real thoughts:
While denim overalls are the perfect piece of clothing for this outfit, they can be quite expensive. If you're having trouble finding affordable clothing, choose a simple blue dress.
If you're not sure where to find a plain white canvas hat, check the fabric craft section of your local supply store. Blank white hats often appear in the same aisles as plain T-shirts, iron-on lettering, fabric paint, and tote bags.
As for the iconic heart logo? Paste it into a Microsoft Word document and resize it accordingly. Preparing the heart on a standard page size layout will help you guess the size of the heart.
route:
1. Using a foam brush, paint the bristles of the wider brush with rainbow colors.
Don’t forget to wash and clean your foam brush before moving on to the next color. Otherwise, you'll end up in a muddy vortex. If you want to speed up the process, use five or six separate foam brushes. About 30 cents each, very cheap at craft stores.
I bet you never thought you could paint with a paintbrush, right?
2. Color the white hat.
Again, make sure to use a new brush (or a clean one) before starting on the next color. This will keep the paint vibrant and bright, just like Lisa Frank.
3. Cut out the rainbow heart and hot glue it to the dress or denim overalls.
If you're afraid of commitment, use a piece of thick tape to remove your heart. You can also hand sew a few stitches to make sure it doesn't move unless you tell it to.
4. Optional: Add panda ears with a little hot glue and scraps of felt.
I used white felt, which I happened to have on hand. You can use purple felt to channel a real panda painter. However, any color of the rainbow works equally well. You only need two small pieces.
What do you get when you wear them all together? Lisa Frank is the only panda painter on the team.
Instead of carrying your paintbrush around all night, tie a string to the handle and turn it into a necklace. To become a full-blown panda painter, grab a silver bucket, paint it with rainbow-colored paint, and use it as a wallet.
Just like that, you rule Halloween.
