Paul Mescal Just Covered Taylor Swift's Most Iconic Breakup Song

Back in 2022, parenting boys Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal reportedly formed a (now coveted) alliance called the Tortured Men's Club ". This, of course, stems from their performance in Conversations with Friends and Normal People, based on Sally Rooney's best-selling book. Now, Mescal has collaborated (sort of) with Alwyn's long-time partner Taylor Swift. The Irish actor performed an impromptu cover of the singer's hit breakup song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

Mescal performed the pop song for W magazine on Valentine's Day, fittingly, without any music and the lyrics had quite a different punch due to his deep voice. Wearing a floral-print shirt, the actor read the first verse until he giggled when he read one of the lines: "Because it's like we haven't seen each other in a month when you said you needed space." He laughed in surprise. and say, "What?" — it's like asking your grandparents to improvise a rendition of Olivia Rodrigo's "Cruel" while expecting them to keep a straight face. By the end, the actor dropped the pretense and sang to the beat with a goofy smile.

The video ends with Mescal saying, "It's kind of sad, isn't it?" Even though TayTay's hit song is a breakup song, Mescal seems to be interested in it. The timing may raise some eyebrows, as it comes just weeks after Mezcal reportedly ended their engagement to singer Phoebe Bridgers. In response, one YouTube user commented under the video: "Phoebe Bridgers has entered the chat room." Another netizen joked: "Thank you for confirming."
