Britney Spears looks back on her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs

Britney Spears has opened up about her relationship with pop star Madonna, including a kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears revealed in her new memoir , The Woman Inside Me , that the trio practiced "blowing kisses" while rehearsing a performance with Madonna and Christina Aguilera 20 years ago. But just minutes before taking the stage, Spears changed her mind and wanted to create a spectacle similar to the one she performed at the 2000 VMAs.

"I thought to myself: I want to experience a moment like this again this year. With a kiss, should I kiss?" she wrote, adding that her VMA kiss became "a huge cultural moment."

Britney learned a lot from Madonna

Spears also reflected on her "Me Against the Music" collaboration with Madonna in her recently released memoir, sharing that she invited Madonna to work with her on the "In the Zone" song.

Spears also revealed that she learned a "big lesson" from Madonna while filming the music video for the 2003 song, when she delayed the shoot to adjust her outfit.

"During our shoot together, I was in awe of the way Madonna didn't compromise her vision. She kept the focus on her," Spears wrote.

"Following Madonna's ideas and meeting deadlines for days on end is what working with her is all about. That was an important lesson for me that took me a long time to absorb: She needed power, so she got it."

In "The Woman Inside Me ," Spears also recalled how she experienced "passivity" from her parents, Jamie and Lynn Spears, while growing up, adding that she wished she could "be me My own parent, my own partner, my own advocate—just like I know Madonna.”

"Madonna's extreme confidence helped me see my situation in a new light. I thought she might have some intuition about what I was going through," Spears wrote. "I needed a little guidance at the time. I was confused about my life. She was trying to guide me."

After five years with Madonna, Spears accepted a 13-year conservatorship in 2008. The legal arrangement ended in November 2021 after Spears testified in court calling for her conservatorship to be terminated.

On October 24, Spears released her highly anticipated memoir , The Woman Inside Me . "It's finally time for me to speak up," she told People ahead of the book's release. "No more conspiracies, no more lies - just me owning my past, present and future."
