Katy Perry jokes she'll 'never be able to sing again' one of her biggest hits

Katy Perry may be planning a return to music after quitting American Idol , but she'll be steering clear of one of her biggest hits thanks to Kelly Clarkson.

On March 19, Clarkson, who won the first season of "American Idol" in 2002, delighted the audience with a cover of Perry's 2012 single "Wide Awake." The performance quickly became a hit online, with fans praising Clarkson's slowed-down performance.

"This show is perfect! I love the rearrangement," one user gushed on Instagram, while another added, "This is probably better than the original." Perry herself was among the comments , she jokingly wrote under a video of her performance: “Well, I can’t sing that song anymore.”

In response to the singer's comments, one user joked, "Once Kelly covers your song, it's no longer your song. She makes it her own and you can never take it back."

"Wide Awake" is the final single from Perry's re-released third studio album , Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection . It peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was inspired by "major life changes," including her divorce from Russell Brand.

"It's been kind of a maze of my life for the past two years," Perry told MTV in 2012. "I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey and maybe trying to get out of the maze at times. There were good parts, there were bad parts, and throughout it all, the younger version of me was guiding me."

This isn't the first time Clarkson has covered Perry's records in recent years. During the show's "Kellyoke" music segment, the singer-turned-daytime host performed 2013's "Roar" and 2011's "The One That Got Away."
