Kristen Wiig just dashed hopes of a Bridesmaids sequel. The actor recently reflected on the 2011 comedy in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , and when the question of a potential sequel came up, she revealed that there was "never a discussion" about making Bridesmaids 2 in earnest.
"That story is over," she explained. “There are 10 million reasons why I love it so much and I think it’s okay to leave it in the world as it is.”
Bridesmaids stars Wiig (who co-wrote the film), Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper as the down-on-her-luck Annie Walker. Center, her life begins to spiral when she is appointed maid of honor. The honor goes to her best friend Lillian (played by Maya Rudolph).
The comedy was a hit with critics and audiences, grossing over $300 million at the global box office. "Bridesmaids" also received two nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress (McCarthy) at the 84th Academy Awards.
This isn't the first time Wiig has talked about a sequel. In 2013, the actor revealed to Harper's Bazaar that studio bosses approached her about making a second film, but she made the "difficult decision" to turn it down.
"We knew the first time that this was it," she explained at the time. "If there was a second one, we would make a lot of money, but that's not the goal of my creative life."
In 2017, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig echoed Wiig's sentiments, calling sequels "dangerous." At that year's Tribeca Film Festival, he said: "People always say they want a sequel to 'Bridesmaids ,' but the whole reason that movie works is [Christine's character] is a mess and she learns how Fix her life. So you can't do a sequel where she has to fix her life again."
Others want a Bridesmaids sequel
Unlike Wiig, several of her co -stars have expressed interest in a follow-up. In May 2023, McCarthy, who plays Meghan in the film, told People magazine that she was "shooting the sequel to Bridesmaids this afternoon," adding, "This group of women is the most amazing group of women ever. matter."
Byrne (aka Helen) also told People magazine that she would "absolutely" sign up for the sequel "if all the girls were in," while Rudolph (Lillian) revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she's excited about the second installment. The film was "disappointed" and joked that "it's not going to be called Bridesmaids — it's going to be called Old Lady ."
