Dua Lipa likes to keep her fans on their toes (pun intended) when it comes to choosing shoes for a red carpet event or fashion stroll in New York City. With a plethora of designer styles to choose from – Bottega Veneta, Vivienne Westwood and more, this fashion muse rarely wears the same style twice.
However, there's one shoe that's an exception to her sartorial approach—and it's definitely divisive in style.
Dua’s layers of complexity
Lipa dressed pretty well in New York City this week. For one of her recent outings, she donned a simple winter outfit. Braving the 30-degree weather in Manhattan, she wore an oversized evening gown with a black jacquard print.
She buttoned up her top, however, the "Dance Night" singer got a sneak peek of the silky black dress underneath. She paired it with semi-sheer leggings - a must-have as the temperatures continue to drop.
Recently, she's entered the Birkin era, but for this outing, she ditched her $12,000 carry-on bag in favor of a slimmer alligator tote that only holds the essentials. Lipa also wore ankle-strap Maison Margiela Tabis with the signature split-toe silhouette. She paired her look with chunky white socks and quirky heels - a simple extra boost.
her controversial shoes
While Lipa rarely, if ever, makes a mistake with her styling choices, many called her choice of shoes "ugly." Although the shoe has been around for decades (the namesake brand was first launched in 1988, inspired by traditional Japanese styles from the 1500s), Tabis have often been the center of heated debate.
When it comes to famous, avant-garde designs, you either love it or hate it - the sign of a true fashion masterpiece.
Celebrities love Margiela Tabis
While the internet often trolls Margiela's toe shoes, the fashion world has spoken out—and they're loving it. Some of the most influential IT girls in fashion today are loyal supporters: Zendaya, Olivia Rodrigo and Rihanna among them.
Kylie Jenner is also a big fan of this look. In January, she was photographed wearing custom bedazzled white Tabis shoes after sitting front row at Maison Margiela's Paris Fashion Week show.
This isn't Lipa's first time competing in a toe shoe rodeo, either. Over the past few months, they have become one of her go-tos. In July, Lipa bought a body-hugging Mary Jane version while leaving her favorite London restaurant.
She paired it with classic white buttoned light wash jeans and a black Gucci Jackie 1961 shoulder bag.
Love them or hate them, this is an undeniable carnage.
