Taylor Swift Dances Through Heartbreak So You Can Deal With Yours on Eras Tour. In "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart," a new song from The Tortured Poets Department , the singer recounts how she felt while playing her three-and-a-half-hour show.
In the first verse, Swift waxes poetic about herself as she presents herself on stage and imagines the audience's perception of her. "I can read your mind, she's having the time of her life," she began. "In her glittering heyday, the lights would refract sequined stars from her silhouette every night."
But in preparation, she gained insight into how she protects her emotions to get into performance mode. "They said, 'Baby, you gotta fake it 'til you make it,' and I did," she sings. “Lights, camera, bitch, smile, even if you want to die/He said he’d love me all his life.”
But when the beat drops, Swift abandons any pretense.
"I'm so depressed, I act like it's my birthday every day," she sings in a sarcastic, bragging tone on the chorus. "I'm obsessed with him but he avoids me like the plague/I cry a lot but I'm efficient and it's an art/You know yourself when you do it with a broken heart very good."
Swift reportedly went through a major breakup while on the Times Tour, splitting from Joe Alwyn after six years of dating. Fans thought she hinted at their breakup during her March 31 show in Dallas, Texas, when she reportedly swapped out her song "Invisible Chords" for "The 1" during the show's folklore performance. The song is about her relationship with Alvin.
In December, Swift told Time magazine that she was more disciplined than ever on the Eras tour and that she would perform no matter how she felt. "I know that whether I'm sick, hurt, heartbroken, uncomfortable or stressed, I'm going to get on that stage," she told the outlet. "If someone buys a ticket for my show, I will attend, unless there is some kind of force majeure."
