One of the 'Grey's Anatomy' stars is reportedly leaving the show

Grey's Anatomy is reportedly about to lose one of its biggest stars. According to Deadline, Jake Borelli is leaving the hit medical drama after seven seasons playing fan-favorite character Levi Schmitt. Sources also claim that Borelli is in talks to return for a few episodes in the upcoming Season 21 to wrap up his character's story.

ABC has not confirmed reports of his departure, which falls on May 13 on the actor's birthday. Borrelli joined the cast of Grey's Anatomy in a recurring role in season 14. By season 16, his character Levi Schmitt was promoted to a main cast member.

One of Borrelli's major storylines came in Season 15, when his character came out as LGBTQ+ and began a relationship with Dr. Nico King (Alex Landi), who ·Dr. King is the first openly gay male character on the show.

Borrell also went public with his character after Nico and Levi's first kiss aired in 2018. "As a gay man, tonight's show is very special to me," he wrote on Instagram. "This is exactly the story I craved as a young gay kid growing up... It blew my mind that I was able to bring Dr. Levi Schmidt to life as he began to struggle with his sexuality. ”

After leaving the show in 2022, Dr. Nico (Randy) returned briefly in Season 20, which is currently airing. However, when he met ex-boyfriend Levi, it was revealed that Nico was in a relationship and expecting his first child.

Gray's future

ABC announced in April 2024 Grey's Anatomy will return for Season 21 later this year, cementing its status as the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history.

"The loyalty and love of 'Grey's Anatomy' fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I'm deeply grateful for that," show creator Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter of the show's renewal.

Meanwhile, it's been reported that Borrelli's departure may not be the only casting change ahead of Season 21. According to Deadline, they include Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Katrin Cast members including Caterina Scorsone and Camilla Luddington will see their Grey's Anatomy contracts expire before the next series.

It's unclear whether series veteran Dr. Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) will return for Season 21 after exiting her full-time role at the end of Season 19.
