The Plastics make a grand return in November, with Mean Girls stars Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert reprising their roles from the iconic 2004 film in Walmart's Black Friday ad campaign. But the only thing missing was Regina George herself, and fans noticed right away.
In a Dec. 20 interview with Variety , Rachel McAdams explained the reason for her absence from the Walmart commercial, which had nothing to do with her co-stars or the film itself. "I don't know; if I'm completely honest, I guess I'm not that excited about advertising," she said. "A movie sounded great, but I'd never done a commercial, and it didn't feel like my bag."
However, McAdams was unaware that Lohan, Seyfried, and Chabot had agreed to join the campaign, which may have changed her mind. "And...I didn't know that everyone was doing it," she admitted. "Of course, I always loved being a part of a Mean Girls reunion and playing with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later."
Walmart Black Friday Ad
The reunion ad introduced fans to Cady Heron, Karen Smith and Gretchen Weiners' lives now, nearly 20 years after graduating from high school, but there was no mention of Regina at all.
Chabert's Gretchen is the mother of a teen who leads the North Shore's Next Generation Plastics Academy, while Lohan's Cady is the school counselor along with her best friend Damien (Daniel Ferdinand). Lanzers), who is now a drama teacher at the school. Seyfried’s Karen is still Karen, delivering weather reports under the watchful eyes of Kevin Gnapur (Rajeev Surendra) and his son Kevin Jr.
New ads centered around each character were released in the weeks leading up to Black Friday, filled with as many clever Mean Girls references and quotes as possible. "It was great to be back together again after all these years," Lohan told People of the reunion. “It’s great to meet everyone.”
Is Rachel in Mean Girls: The Musical ?
McAdams said in the interview that another Mean Girls movie "sounds great," which is why there's talk of her returning in Tina Fey's upcoming film adaptation of "Mean Girls: The Musical."
In April, she told Bustle she'd be willing to star in the musical if Fey would create some characters for her and her fellow Plastics. “I don’t see any way to shoehorn us into it,” she said. "If Tina (Fey) can fix this, I'll definitely be there."
Unfortunately, none of them will show up, but it's not for lack of trying. "Tina and I tried a few ideas, but ultimately it was hard to make them all work," McAdams told Variety .
"I'm super frustrated with whatever she wants to do. I think the direction it's going to take is going to be really cool and I can't wait to see it."
