'The Office' spin-off is in the works

The office is coming back — sort of. On May 8, Peacock announced the launch of a new Office series. However, this is not a reboot or revival of the original show, but a new series set in the same universe.

The as-yet-untitled project will follow the same documentary format as the original show, but will focus on a new cast of characters working in different industries.

The official plot synopsis provided to Variety reads: "The documentary crew that immortalized the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin is looking for new subjects as they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper that... Publishers are trying to revive it through volunteer journalists."

The first two cast members - "White Lotus" star Sabrina Impacciatore and "Star Wars" actor Domhnall Gleeson - have been announced, but no details about their characters have been revealed.

The new series is co-created by Greg Daniels, who adapted the American version of the British version of The Office, and Michael Koman. They will also serve as executive producers alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, creators of the original British series. Production is scheduled to begin in July.

Since the new series is set in the same universe as The Office , beloved characters may appear, but no plans have been revealed for any of the original actors to reprise their roles.

Some of them might be able to do the job if asked. Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fisher have expressed interest in returning for an "Office" movie, or any reboot project in which Daniels is involved. “I would do it for my kids because I think they would find it fun,” Kinsey said, with Fisher adding, “As long as Greg is writing it and he’s in charge of it, then I’ll say yes. "

However, Daniels has previously said he has no interest in reviving The Office in any way. "I feel like we ended the story perfectly," he told TheWire in November. "I think we have the luckiest, best cast in television to make this show."
